California Projects That Set the Standard

A look back at six award-winning road and bridge projects from the Golden State as submissions for the 2026 Top 10 Roads & Bridge Awards remain open through Sept. 4

With the recent release of Roads & Bridges’ California issue, we are looking back at several standout projects from the Golden State that have earned recognition in past Top 10 Roads & Bridge Awards. From major rehabilitation efforts to landmark structures that reconnected communities, these projects showcase the innovation, collaboration and problem-solving that define award-winning infrastructure. Submissions for the 2026 Top 10 Roads & Bridge Awards are now open through Sept. 4, and we encourage project teams to apply.

Sycamore Trail Phase 2 – Pedestrian Overcrossing Bridge | West Sacramento, California

The Sycamore Trail Phase 2 Pedestrian Overcrossing Bridge reconnected two West Sacramento neighborhoods that had been separated by U.S. 50 for more than 70 years, creating a safe route for pedestrians and cyclists between schools, parks and community destinations. The 1,950-foot-long bridge combines ADA accessibility, multimodal connectivity and community-focused design, featuring public gathering spaces, decorative elements and native landscaping. Project teams overcame significant site and utility constraints with an innovative S-shaped alignment while coordinating construction over an active eight-lane highway. Sustainability features such as drought-tolerant plantings and energy-efficient lighting further enhanced the project’s long-term value. The result is a lasting community connection that earned recognition in the 2025 Roads & Bridges Top 10 Bridge Awards.

San Gabriel River Bridge Hinge and Diaphragm Repairs | Irwindale, California

The San Gabriel River Bridge repair project required California's first-ever 126-hour highway closures to replace critical bridge hinges and diaphragms while minimizing long-term disruption to motorists. To meet the aggressive schedule, the project team developed and tested a custom rapid-strength concrete mix, constructing an off-site mock-up bridge to prove the approach before construction began. Close coordination between Caltrans, Flatiron and local agencies helped keep the complex operation on track during two full roadway closures in 2022. The innovative strategy ultimately allowed the work to be completed 16 days ahead of schedule. The project demonstrated how creative planning and collaboration can extend the life of vital infrastructure while reducing impacts on the traveling public.

Sixth Street Viaduct Replacement Project | Los Angeles, California

Known as the "Ribbon of Light," the Sixth Street Viaduct Replacement Project transformed a beloved Los Angeles landmark into one of the most innovative bridge projects in the country. The 3,500-foot structure features a striking network tied-arch design, seismic resilience designed to withstand a major earthquake, and enhanced accommodations for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles. Its sculptural arches, programmable LED lighting and sweeping views of downtown Los Angeles have made it both a transportation link and a civic destination. The project also introduced engineering innovations that set new precedents for bridge design and construction in the United States. By reconnecting the Arts District and Boyle Heights, the viaduct demonstrates how infrastructure can strengthen communities while creating an enduring public landmark.

Route 210 Roadway Rehabilitation | Los Angeles, California

The Route 210 Roadway Rehabilitation project revitalized nearly 10 miles of heavily traveled interstate in Los Angeles County, extending the pavement's service life by more than 40 years. Over four years, crews replaced roughly 400,000 square yards of pavement, rehabilitated 16 bridges and installed thousands of precast concrete panels while keeping traffic moving through one of Southern California's busiest corridors. Strong collaboration between Caltrans and Flatiron helped streamline construction, reduce closure durations and identify cost-saving innovations, including design changes that saved hundreds of thousands of dollars. The project also utilized an on-site concrete batch plant to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impacts. The result is a safer, longer-lasting roadway that demonstrates the value of innovation and teamwork in delivering complex transportation projects.

I-5 Oso Parkway to Alicia Parkway (Segment 2) | Mission Viejo and Laguna Hills, California

The I-5 Oso Parkway to Alicia Parkway project expanded capacity along a busy stretch of Interstate 5 in Orange County, adding a new lane in each direction while improving ramps, bridges and traffic flow. The complex effort included construction of seven bridges, 22 retaining walls, extensive drainage improvements and more than three miles of electrical infrastructure. Working alongside active rail lines and other environmental constraints, the project team relied on strong collaboration and proactive problem-solving to keep construction moving forward and avoid costly delays. Improvements were delivered while maintaining traffic and minimizing impacts on one of Southern California's most heavily traveled corridors. The project showcases how teamwork and innovative planning can help prepare critical infrastructure for future transportation demands.

I-680 HOV Lane Completion and Express Lane Conversion | Contra Costa County, California

The I-680 HOV Lane Completion and Express Lane Conversion Project improved mobility along one of the Bay Area's busiest corridors by adding three miles of express lane and converting eight miles of existing HOV lane. The project created a continuous 25-mile express lane system, eliminated a major bottleneck and improved travel time reliability for thousands of daily commuters. Strong collaboration between transportation agencies, designers and construction teams helped the project overcome environmental constraints, complex traffic management requirements and multiple stakeholder interests. The effort was delivered under budget and a year ahead of schedule, allowing additional funds to be invested in corridor landscaping and irrigation improvements. The project demonstrates how strategic infrastructure investments can reduce congestion and improve regional connectivity.
