The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) continues to improve its delivery of on-time and on-budget projects, according to its first quarter fiscal year 2007 report issued this week. VDOT completed 93% of its construction projects within budget and 91% on schedule. Likewise, VDOT completed 96% of maintenance projects within budget.

VDOT was due to complete 55 construction contracts by the end of the first quarter, which ended Sept. 30. Of those 50, 91% were completed on schedule. This exceeds a goal of 70% for this year, and tops the 86% score for the first quarter of fiscal year 2006. VDOT also ended this quarter with 93% of construction projects completed within budget, compared with 85% for the same period last year.

VDOT improved its on-budget performance on maintenance projects to 96% compared with 84% last year. The department delivered 68% of maintenance projects on time in the first quarter of this fiscal year compared with 79% at this time last year.

"To complete more than 90% of our construction projects on time and on budget and to finish 96% of our maintenance projects within budget is truly remarkable, especially when you compare where we are now to where we were just three or four years ago," said David S. Ekern, VDOT commissioner.

"This quarter's decline in the number of on-time maintenance projects will prompt us to focus more attention on improving the timely delivery of our maintenance program," Ekern said. "Although this first quarter's result is lower than we had hoped, we are still confident that we can achieve the fiscal year goal of delivering 75% of our maintenance projects on time. We are committed to continuous improvement and efficiencies in order to become the premier state transportation agency of the 21st century."
