The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has unveiled plans to eliminate seven railroad crossings in the next few years.
Locomotives barreling across roadways often cause commuter back-ups and wrecks, which has become a point of concern for both residents and transportation officials.
NCDOT is planning to begin work on eliminating the seven crossings by building bridges over or tunnels underneath the roads in 2020. Department officials expect these projects to not only improve traffic flow, but to increase safety as well, both for commuters and trains.
Eventually, state officials would like to eliminate most crossings on major rail arteries throughout the state.
