The Interstate Highway System Turns 70: Help Us Tell Its Story
Calling all Roads & Bridges readers!
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the U.S. Interstate Highway System, and Roads & Bridges would like your help celebrating this landmark piece of infrastructure.
We held a roundtable discussion about the interstate's future. We also published Then & Now photographs of highways and bridges along the interstate. But we're not done! We want to continue highlighting how the interstate has changed in each state through the rest of 2026, and for this next part, we are asking for help.
At Roads & Bridges, we value every opportunity to engage with our readers — the people who have designed, built, maintained and traveled the nation’s highways.
From America’s longest interstate, Interstate 90, stretching from Seattle to Boston, to Interstate 10, which traverses the southern U.S. from Santa Monica, Calif., to Jacksonville, Fla., the interstate system is filled with stories waiting to be told.
If you have photos and memories of your travels or work on the U.S. Interstate Highway System, we would love to see them. Or, if you have memories of your work or travels, we want to hear them.
Tell us about your favorite cross-country road trip. What sights stood out along the way? Or, if you worked on the system, what challenges did your crew face during construction?
The stories of America’s roadway cannot be told without the millions of people that shaped them. Your submissions will be invaluable, and we cannot wait to share them with the Roads & Bridges community.
