Interstate at 70: Then & Now Across America

As the U.S. Interstate Highway System marks 70 years, historic and modern photos show how America’s highway network has changed, expanded and endured

The Interstate Highway System is marking 70 years since its creation in 1956. To commemorate the anniversary, Roads & Bridges is sharing then-and-now photos of interstates from 44 states and the District of Columbia.

Explore the photo series to see how the system has evolved over seven decades while continuing to support cross-country travel, freight and logistics.

Roads & Bridges would like to thank the FHWA for providing access to its remarkable archive of historic interstate photos, which helped us look back at 70 years of the Interstate Highway System.

This project would not have been possible without the support of DOTs, state agencies, firms and organizations across the country that helped provide the photos featured in this series. Roads & Bridges thanks everyone who contributed to bringing 70 years of interstate history to life.

Alaska, Arkansas, Delaware, South Carolina, South Dakota and West Virginia are not included because archival images were not provided by the FHWA.
