Illinois DOT announces six-year baseline plan for road and bridge projects

Oct. 22, 2019

As part of the Rebuild Illinois program, the new plan lays out $23.5 billion invested in transportation projects across the state

The Illinois DOT (IDOT) recently released its annual multi-year plan of road and bridge construction projects across the state, which serves as the baseline plan for the Rebuild Illinois capital program.

IDOT selected these FY 2020-2025 road and bridge improvements by evaluating the condition, frequency of use, and crash and fatality rates across the state's transportation system. The next six years will see $23.5 billion invested in maintaining, preserving and expanding 4,212 miles of roadway and 9.2 million sq ft of bridge deck statewide.

"This multi-year plan gets us on the path to fixing our roads and bridges, putting policies into action that ensure our transportation system in Illinois is reliable, safe, and provides economic opportunity for generations to come," Acting IDOT Secretary Omer Osman said in a statement. "It is the blueprint for how we Rebuild Illinois."

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker joined IDOT to announce the multi-year plan this week.

The state said it plans to prioritize maintaining its transportation system over time in order to manage long-term capital needs in a more cost-effective manner. The state said the previous approach would consist of waiting to rebuild transportation infrastructure assets until they had deteriorated so much to the point of causing safety hazards.

The six-year plan dedicates over 75% of the funding to reconstructing and preserving roads and bridges. Of the major categories of state investments in the plan, $7.58 billion will go toward roadway reconstruction and preservation, $4.99 billion for bridge replacements and repairs, $1.59 billion for safety and system modernizations like interchange reconstructions, $3.08 billion for strategic expansion of the system, and $2.11 billion for system support like engineering and land acquisition.
