TxDOT to build new highway in northeast El Paso

The new Northeast Parkway will enable motorists to use an alternate route to get across the city

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has plans to build a new highway in northeast El Paso.

Officials said the Northeast Parkway will help create an alternate route to get drivers from east to west El Paso and vice versa.

The highway would split at Loop 375 just before Railroad Drive and continue for 10 miles to Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, giving drivers access to I-10 through New Mexico highways 213 and 404. The highway is also designed to help 18-wheeler trucks avoid Transmountain Road, as it is a challenging trek for many drivers.

The Northeast Parkway is proposed to be a four-lane highway that will be built in two phases with a price tag of $320 million. It could be built in the next five to 10 years. Funding has not been approved, but documents related to an environmental study should be approved in the near future.
