TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT: Smartphone parking apps lining up in Boston

Dec. 10, 2014

Competing apps will allow drivers to find public spaces, private spaces or a valet

Drivers competing for parking spots in the greater Boston area will soon have a slew of smartphone apps to help them in their search, with three new applications set to debut in the coming months.

The first of the new slate is called Veer and is already available for iPhone users. After they input the amount of time they need to park, Veer provides a list of nearby options sorted by price. The app guides users to their chosen destination, with a picture of the garage entrance to ensure they don’t miss it. Once they’re parked, users can make a note of where they parked and share the location via SMS or Twitter if they’re meeting someone. An Android version of Veer is forthcoming.

Park Right There will also help drivers find an available space, only by connecting them with owners of privately-held spaces. Little is known about the mechanics of the app, but industry experts believe the owners will be able to rent their spaces out on an hourly, daily or monthly basis.

The final entry, SpotLight Parking, takes a different approach, mobilizing a valet to park the vehicle and then return it later. The initial business plan allowed drivers to have their car picked up and dropped off anywhere, but after concerns from the Boston Department of Transportation, the system was changed so drivers will now have to drive to designated valet parking zones.
