The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) announced plans last week to build out its intelligent transportation system (ITS) network by installing new equipment along I-10 from Tallahassee to Pensacola. When completed, the devices will become part of the larger I-10 Rural Freeway Management System.

World Fiber Technologies and Genesis Group were chosen as the contractors for the project, which will deploy a wide array of ITS equipment to help improve traffic flow on I-10, including:

  •

  • New traffic cameras along the entire stretch

  • Digital message sign systems

  • Microwave vehicle detectors

  • Travel time sensors

  • Highway advisory radio systems; and

  • Road weather information sensors

In total, the network will utilize 158 miles of fiber-optic cable. The entire system will be monitored from the traffic management centers in Pensacola and Tallahassee, at least for the time being—FDOT District 3 also mentioned building a new traffic management center at its headquarters in Chipley.

Total costs for the project are expected to reach $24.05 million.
