    ITS: FDOT launches advanced traffic management system project in Broward County

    The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has begun deployment of a new $8.9 million advanced traffic management system (ATMS) in central Broward County. Officials with FDOT District Four project that the system will reduce crashes in the county by 3% and incident duration by 30%.

     

    The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has begun deployment of a new $8.9 million advanced traffic management system (ATMS) in central Broward County. Officials with FDOT District Four project that the system will reduce crashes in the county by 3% and incident duration by 30%.

    Components of the ATMS will be installed across seven communities in Browar County. Deployment will include 22 miles of fiber optic communications infrastructure, closed-circuit cameras, arterial dynamic message signs, microwave vehicle detection systems, travel time system readers and devices for emergency traffic signal preemption and transit signal priority.

    The system will be monitored from the SMART SunGuide Regional Transportaion Management Center, allowing greater monitoring of crashes and other incidents while allowing improved coordination between emergency responders.

    Full deployment is expected to be complete this fall.
