The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) and Caltrans announced that FasTrak transponders are now available for purchase in advance of the new Metro ExpressLanes debuting in the near future. The lanes along the I-110 Harbor Freeway are set to open in the fall while the San Bernardino Freeway lanes will open in early 2013.
Part of a one-year demonstration program, the Metro ExpressLanes will replace 25 miles of existing carpool lanes along both highways. All solo drivers who wish to use the lanes will be required to pay a toll; carpools, public transit, vanpools, privately operated buses and motorcycles will have toll-free access.
Motorists can open a FasTrak account and get a transponder online or at the new Metro ExpressLanes Customer Walk-In Center in Gardena, which also opened on Wednesday. Toll charges will range from $.25 to $1.40 depending on the demand.
