COMMUNICATION: New Jersey debuts dynamic message signs

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced the activation of its first set of dynamic message signs to alert motorists to upcoming traffic conditions. If these signs prove effective, the department will install others on highways across the state.

Fifteen signs were initially deployed for testing on I-287 and I-195, as part of a new initiative to improve intelligent transportation systems (ITS) statewide. Information is displayed on travel times to major waypoints and intersecting roads. NJDOT hopes to have 50 signs in total installed across the state by Memorial Day; the focus will be on I-78, I-80, I-280, I-295 and a portion of I-95 in Mercer County.

During the initial run, the signs will only display information during peak traffic times in both the morning and afternoon.
