Video: Illinois uses 3-D laser scanners

Several Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) districts have recently begun using a 3-D laser scanner in construction and surveying operations. IDOT began a research implementation project several years ago where the technology was a viable solution for IDOT crews. The implementation stage of the project is studying the benefits that a 3-D intersection provides in the area of worker safety. The technology provides a 3-D graphical image of the intersection. Eventually, the agency hopes that all IDOT districts will have a 3-D laser scanner to use for construction and design purposes.
