TC3 prepares users for winter with training at no cost

Nov. 19, 2018

Safety is always the number one priority on a highway project. TC3 is offering two of the safety courses at no cost through November 2018: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and High-Visibility Garments.

Additionally, with the winter maintenance season right around the corner, TC3 wants to ensure highway crews are able to respond to any weather conditions at any time. Knowing that these preparations begin well before the season, it spotlights it winter maintenance training series. All of these courses are available for no registration fee.

Personal Safety

PPE is the last line of defense for protecting workers—and it is crucial to every highway project. The PPE course provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary for proper care and use of PPE. The High-Visibility Garments course is for workers who perform tasks on or near moving vehicles or equipment, where the need to be seen is critical for safety.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

This course covers all areas of personal protection, including eye and visibility protection, head protection, respirators, hearing protection, hand and foot protection, and fall protection. Participants will learn when training is necessary, the proper use and care of PPEs and the skill necessary to use PPEs prior to performing work.

High-Visibility Garments

By wearing high-visibility garments, workers can draw attention to themselves to prevent injuries and fatalities from struck-by hazards in complex work environments, when the ability to be seen at all times is necessary.

Winter Preparation

In order to provide adequate maintenance service throughout the winter season, highway managers and crews need to be properly trained. For this reason, TC3 has announced that it teamed up with the Snow and Ice Pooled Fund Cooperative Program (SICOP) to offer seven courses on winter maintenance activities. They are:

Blowing Snow Mitigation

This course provides technical and practical instruction in planning for and mitigating the negative effects blowing snow can cause on roadways. Techniques for designing and installing structural and living snow fences are included, as well as optimizing roadway configuration for new construction projects.

Deicing

This course introduces the learner to the various aspects of deicing winter roadways, such as materials, equipment and application techniques.

Equipment Maintenance

This course presents procedures that all winter maintenance operators should be familiar with in preparing and maintaining snow and ice control equipment.

Performance Measures for Snow and Ice Control Operations

This course provides instruction on planning for, monitoring and objectively evaluating winter roadway operations.

Proper Plowing Techniques

This training presents the proper techniques for plowing various roadway configurations, including two-lane roads, multi-lane highways, one-way streets, traffic circles and other situations.

Selecting Snow and Ice Control Materials to Mitigate Environmental Impacts

This course provides the winter maintenance supervisor or mid-level manager with a systematic approach to selecting snow and ice control materials best suited for a specific region using a balanced method that addresses material performance, cost, infrastructure impact and environmental impact. As users work through the module, they will complete a series of forms. After they complete the module, they will have identified the best material(s) for their region.

Winter Maintenance Management

This course provides learners with guidance on best practices for managing the equipment, facilities, material and staff necessary for efficient and effective winter roadway maintenance.
