Key Takeaways

  • TDOT is planning a $350 million project to widen 6.18 miles of Edgemoor Road and expand the Clinch River Bridge to four lanes.
  • The project includes new traffic signals, a reduced speed limit, and pedestrian safety enhancements along the corridor.
  • Construction begins in 2029 and will take about four years, requiring 87 property acquisitions across Anderson County.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) are conceptualizing plans to widen a 6.18-stretch of Edgemoor Road in Anderson County, marking a major step toward improving regional mobility and roadway safety.

The $350 million project would expand the roadway to four lanes — two lanes in each direction — between Clinton Highway and Oak Ridge Highway, according to WVLT 8 News. The Clinch River Bridge will also be expanded to four lanes to further improve capacity and reduce congestion.

Design and Safety Improvements Under Review

While a final design has not yet been adopted, planned upgrades include four new traffic signals and a speed limit reduction from 55 mph to 50 mph, according to Oak Ridger. TDOT officials expect final plans to be completed in early 2026.

John Barrett, TDOT Region 1 Highway Program Manager, said the corridor includes several recreational facilities, highlighting the need for sidewalks and pedestrian infrastructure upgrades, WVLT 8 reported.

Construction Timeline and Property Acquisitions

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2029 and is expected to take up to four years to complete. According to Oak Ridger, the project will require the acquisition of 87 properties and rights of way to, affecting 18 businesses and 69 homeowners. The acquisition phase is slated to begin early next year and take three years to finalize.

With the installation of four new traffic lights, the roadway will have traffic signals at the following intersections: Meadow View, Melton Lake Drive, Old Emory Road, New Henderson Road, Dogwood Lane and Clinton Highway, Oak Ridger reported.

During construction, Edgemoor Road will remain open during construction, with the work divided into two sections  — from Clinton Highway to over the Edgemoor Bridge, and the other from the bridge to South Illinois Avenue.
