The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has unveiled some design ideas for the I-35 Capital Express Central expansion project. The eight mile project runs along the I-35 corridor from U.S. Highway 290 East down south to the SH 71 and Ben White Boulevard.

Concept renderings were unveiled by the transportation department on Tuesday evening during a public aesthetics meetingThe $4.5 billion plan would remove upper decks, widen east-west cross-street bridges, improve pedestrian and bike paths and lower I-35 main lanes between Airport Boulevard and Lady Bird Lake, and Riverside Drive and Oltorf Street.

The following components are planned for the project:

  • Removal of the existing I-35 decks
  • Lowering of the roadway
  • Addition of two non-tolled HOV lanes in each direction
  • East-west cross-street bridges
  • Pedestrian, bicycle shared-use paths

The project has been sent to the federal government for approval after TxDOT finished its public engagement and comment period on March 7.

TxDOT is expected to release the final design and scope in August for the project. Construction is expected to begin mid-2024. The project is expected to take approximately 8 years to complete with a completion date of 2033.
