Proposed plan calls for 45-mile toll lane network along I-64 in Virginia

Sept. 24, 2019

The goal is to have the system in place by 2025

The Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization (HRTPO) is proposing a 45-mile network of toll lanes on I-64 that would be designed to help drivers avoid traffic jams between Newport News and Chesapeake in Virginia.

The plan is a significant expansion of earlier proposals for high-occupancy toll (HOT) lanes. The goal is to have the system in place by 2025, with the opening of the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel tubes and causeways carrying a total of four lanes, according to The Virginian-Pilot.

HOT lanes are already in operation along reversible lanes in Norfolk between I-564 and I-264 and are planned for some of the new Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel lanes and approaches.

According to WTKR-TV, transportation officials have projected that the amount of vehicles on the road are expected to increase by 20% over the next 20 years. The hope is that the new HOT lanes would significantly cut down on traffic congestion during peak travel hours.
