Crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin long-term single-lane closures and traffic shifts on Interstate 64 in Newport News starting Monday, as construction continues on the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Newport News Segment.
The first phase involves closing one inside lane in each direction at the J. Clyde Morris Boulevard overpass (exit 258), followed by similar closures near Hampton Roads Center Parkway (exit 261) beginning as early as Monday, May 11.
Overnight ramp closures are also scheduled from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. during implementation.
These lane closures will remain in place through summer, with future phases shifting closures to center and outside lanes.
The work is part of a multi-year project converting high-occupancy vehicle lanes into Express Lanes along a 10.5-mile stretch of I-64.
The HREL Newport News Segment is part of a larger 45-mile Express Lanes network aimed at easing congestion and improving travel reliability across Hampton Roads.
Motorists are urged to drive cautiously through work zones and check 511Virginia.org or the 511-integrated Waze app for real-time travel updates.
