Last week's answer
Question: About how much road salt does the U.S. use each year for winter maintenance?
Answer: 20 million tons
Road salt has been used to de-ice U.S. highways since the 1930s, originally using about 5,000 tons per year. The amount of rock salt currently used on U.S. highways is enough to fill dump trucks bumper to bumper for 8,333 miles. It is recommended to scatter rock salt with 3 inches between grains, using about a cup or a cup and a half of rock salt for every 10 sidewalk squares or two parking spaces.
