New bike lanes, sidewalks, ADA curb ramps and traffic signals coming to key corridor

Next week, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) will begin construction on a stretch of Lake Drive in Milwaukee County

TThe pavement replacement project will cost $9.88 million.

Crews will replace the pavement in the project limits, install new traffic signals at the Lake Drive and Capitol Drive intersection and build curb extensions along multiple intersections for pedestrian safety. Additional work includes an on-street bike lane, new water mains, sidewalks and curb ramps to meet ADA standards.

Lake Drive will be closed to traffic for the duration of the project, WisDOT officials said. One lane will remain for local access only. Pedestrian access will be maintained on one side of the street during construction, officials added.

WisDOT officials said motorists are encouraged to use North Avenue, Oakland Avenue and Hampton Road to get around the closure. Motorists who want to access Lincoln Memorial Drive are encouraged to use Kenwood Boulevard, Oakland Avenue and Hampton Road to avoid closure.

The project is scheduled to be completed by late fall.
