The Alabama Department of Transportation has announced the upcoming launch of the state’s largest transportation construction project in history and released funding for 13 road projects across the state.
Mobile River Bridge and Bayway
Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey authorized the start of construction on the Mobile River Bridge and Bayway project this week, according to an ALDOT press release. A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Friday.
ALDOT issued a notice to proceed to the Kiewit Massman Traylor (KMT) design-build team on Sept. 25, following the close of bond sales and federal financing earlier this month.
The $3.2 billion project will be conducted over two phases.
The first phase will include the construction of a new six-lane cable-stayed bridge, restriping the existing Bayway to provide six lanes of travel across Mobile Bay and improvements to major interchanges, intersections and traffic flow throughout the corridor in Mobile and Baldwin counties.
Phase two will focus on the construction of a new Bayway structure as additional funding becomes available, with future toll revenue helping finance the project, according to a July press release from ALDOT.
$3.8 Million in State Funding Released
Alabama is awarding $3.8 million in funding to cities and counties to complete 13 road projects across the state.
The grants are the final round of funding made available this year through ALDOT’s Annual Grant Program, created through the Rebuild Alabama Act.
The two previous rounds awarded more than $11 million in state funding, bringing the total amount of grants to more than $15 million for fiscal year 2026, according to an ALDOT press release.
The Rebuild Alabama Act established an annual program that sets aside a minimum of $10 million from the state’s share of gas tax revenue for local projects. The annual grant program is currently set at $15 million per year.
Cities and counties also contributed more than $1.3 million in local matching funds for the projects awarded, which are expected to move forward within one year of receiving the funds.
A majority of the 13 projects will resurface roads across several counties and cities, along with road widening projects in Hale County and Alexander City. Jackson County will see full-depth reclamation on Country Road 18 from AL-40 to Country Road 124.
