March 31, 2022

Rehabilitation is expected to be complete and fully open to traffic in 2023

Parkersburg Bridge Partners (PBP)—the team overseeing the Parkersburg Memorial Bridge Rehabilitation over the Ohio River—recently selected Modjeski and Masters as the Engineer of Record for the project.

Modjeski and Masters will provide all of the bridge design engineering services for the steel truss and girder bridge that crosses the Ohio River between Parkersburg, West Virginia and Belpre, Ohio

According to a news release from the project team, the rehabilitated Parkersburg Memorial Bridge will include a new paint and coating system, a completely new deck, superstructure and substructure repairs, and upgraded lighting and other aesthetic treatments. When completed, the bridge will use an open-road, all-electronic tolling system and service approximately 4 million crossings per year.

“The Parkersburg Memorial Bridge is significant and iconic to the people of Parkersburg, and we are proud to provide enhancements with Parkersburg Bridge Partners that will allow the bridge to continue there for years to come,” Dan McCaffrey, P.E., Structural Project Manager at Modjeski and Masters, said in a statement. “The rehabilitated bridge will enhance local commerce by providing a more direct route for business traffic when the current load posting is removed.”

In 2021, PBP was selected by the City of Parkersburg to purchase, rehabilitate, and modernize the Parkersburg Memorial Bridge. The rehabilitation project is fully funded by PBP and uses no local, state, or federal funds for construction of operations. PBP says it will provide all ongoing operations, maintenance, tolling, and customer service activities for the rehabilitated structure.

According to the PBP website, the team will deliver a "like-new structure for the community and traveling public to enjoy for a minimum of 50 years."

Construction is expected to begin in March 2022. Rehabilitation is expected to be complete and fully open to traffic in 2023.
