Illinois DOT Provides Construction Update on Chain of Rocks Bridge

Eastbound bridge is slated to open by end of year

The Chain of Rocks Bridge, which spans the Mississippi on Interstate 270, has been under construction since last year when Illinois and Missouri teamed up to improve the critical freight corridor. Now, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has offered an update on its progress. 

"It's progressing well," Joel Cumby, engineer for IDOT, said to KSDK News. "The contractor is continuing to build the piers on land and water. People driving by can see we are well on our way to setting up the girders and have begun to build all of the formwork to pour the concrete deck. We are anticipating to do (that) by later this month."

According to Cumby, motorists can expect the new eastbound bridge to open by the end of this year.
