TAMPA HILLSBOROUGH EXPRESSWAY AUTHORITY WINS BEST OF ITS AWARD

June 6, 2019—The Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA) Connected Vehicle Pilot has been named the winner of this year’s Best of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Award from the Intelligent Transportation Society of America. THEA received the award on June 4 at ITS America’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C. The THEA Connected Vehicle Pilot is an innovative effort to deploy cutting-edge connected vehicle technology in downtown Tampa to help prevent crashes and keep traffic moving. This multimodal project, which is sponsored by the U.S. DOT, has equipped more than 1,000 cars, 10 buses, eight streetcars, and a pedestrian crosswalk with technology that enables vehicles to “talk” to each other, as well as traffic signals and other elements of the infrastructure. In certain potentially hazardous situations, the driver of a connected vehicle hears an audible warning, and a safety message is displayed in the rearview mirror. The Best of ITS Award annually recognizes organizations that have implemented the most advanced transportation projects in the nation. (Photo courtesy of THEA).

PROJECT TO TRANSFORM QUEENS BOULEVARD RECOGNIZED FOR DESIGN EXCELLENCE

June 7, 2019—A project designed by AECOM with NV5 to transform Queens Boulevard—one of New York City’s busiest and most dangerous thoroughfares—was recognized Tuesday at the 37th Annual Awards for Excellence and Design, hosted by the New York City Public Design Commission. The Queens Boulevard Reconstruction Project—led by the New York City Department of Design and Construction and the Department of Transportation—aims to ease traffic and eliminate fatalities along the 5-mile corridor from Roosevelt Avenue to Union Turnpike. The project is part of the City’s Vision Zero initiative—a multi-agency program to eradicate traffic deaths and serious injuries on New York City’s streets. Queens Boulevard was identified as one of the initiative’s “Priority Corridors” due to the high number of traffic accidents and pedestrian deaths that occur there annually. The Queens Boulevard Reconstruction Project calls for a widened service road, raised bike paths and walkways, landscaped medians, and the relocation of bus stops to improve rider safety. It was designed by AECOM as the Prime Consultant with sub-consultant NV5 as the lead urban designer and was one of eight New York City design projects recognized at Tuesday’s event.
