The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT), joined by the Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) and Carolinas AGC, launched National Work Zone Awareness Week on Monday, highlighting the importance of protecting highway workers.
Observed April 21–25, the week raises awareness about work zone safety and the daily risks faced by road crews.
“SCDOT’s top priority is the safety of our employees and contractors,” said Justin Powell, Secretary of Transportation, in a statement. “With support from law enforcement and drivers, we can help ensure every worker returns home safely.”
SCDOT and SCDPS are introducing new speed trailers in construction zones to deter speeding. These units, expected to be deployed statewide by July 1, display vehicle speeds and can relay emergency alerts but do not issue tickets or capture images.
“We are excited to add this tool to our shared mission of highway safety,” said Michael Oliver, SCDPS deputy director, in a statement. “These trailers will help slow down traffic and protect both workers and drivers.”
Carolinas AGC’s Leslie Clark praised the initiative, calling it a “valuable step” in protecting construction workers across the Carolinas.
The agencies continue to use signs, cones, barrels and law enforcement to improve safety in work zones.
