A three-vehicle crash happened in a construction zone on the Grant Marsh Bridge on Interstate 94 between Bismarck and Mandan, N.D. on Monday morning. There were no injuries.
Traffic on the bridge was reduced to single lanes for both eastbound and westbound vehicles, and speeds were reduced, due to a construction project.
According to the Highway Patrol, a Ford Expedition was heading east across the bridge around 8:15 a.m. when a vehicle in front of it slowed down. The driver of the Expedition braked and steered to the right, and the SUV hit barrels that protect motorists from striking the bridge rail. Approximately six barrels were damaged.
The Patrol reported that the Expedition hit the bridge rail and overturned on its roof and slid on the roadway. It was struck from behind by a Lincoln. A Nissan in the oncoming lane hit the Expedition also. All three vehicles were damaged.
Contractors are making repairs and improvements to structural steel beneath the bridge, concrete on the bridge deck, guardrails, approach slabs and lighting. The lane reductions will continue through the summer until work is finished in late October, according to the North Dakota Department of Transportation.
