The I-85 widening project in Georgia is the first in the state's Major Mobility Investment Program and aims to relieve traffic congestion across Gwinnett, Barrow, and Jackson counties. The stretch of highway undergoing widening on I-85 covers just over 10 miles between I-985 and S.R. 53. The new lanes will take the place of the existing median separating the two directions of travel, along with a paved shoulder and a concrete median barrier. In addition to the replacement of three overpass bridges, the Georgia DOT is also replacing one of its mainline bridges along I-85 over the Mulberry River. The addition of the new lane miles along I-85 is projected to reduce delay along the corridor by 56%. Construction began in July 2018 and work is on schedule to be substantially complete by July 2020.
