TRANSIT: State of Florida providing $213 million for Orlando airport transit hub

In a news conference this week, Fla. Gov. Rick Scott said the state will be contributing $213 million over three years toward a new transportation hub at Orlando International Airport. The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, which operates the airport, is adding $467.5 million of its own money.

The project, called the South Airport People Mover Complex by the governor’s office, would center around an intermodal transit facility providing access to air and ground transportation—including rental cars, taxis, buses and private vehicles.

Gov. Scott also said the facility would be linked to the new All Aboard Florida private rail line that will link South Florida and central Florida; that line could begin service as early as late 2015.

According to the governor’s office, the project would create 1,900 construction jobs; the new facility itself is expected to create an additional 380 permanent jobs.
