Massachusetts DOT (MassDOT) opened a new Orient Heights Station, part of the Boston subway system, in late November. The agency spent $28 million to rebuild the station, which now features better sidewalks, walkways and elevators to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The station also follows LEED/Sustainability Design Guidelines with the installation of solar panels on its roof, which provide the station with 20% of its electricity.  Other green features include energy-efficient heating and cooling systems and lighting.

MassDOT, along with its partners, took on two additional projects at the same time, replacing a Revere Beach Parkway bridge and constructing a dual bicycle and pedestrian path that connects Bremen Street Park with Marsh Island. By compiling the projects, MassDOT and its partners saved more than $4 million and significantly decreased the length of station closures.
