TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT: Iowa DOT incorporates new service to monitor roads
May 12, 2017
The department will employ Inrix's Dangerous Slowdowns service, which warns drivers of sudden reductions in speed or stopped traffic
The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) is now using the latest traffic services from Inrix to monitor, measure and manage the state’s road network.
Inrix has been supplying real-time and historical traffic data to Iowa DOT for the last three years, in support of its traffic management and operations. For the new 2017 agreement, Iowa DOT will now make use of several recently added Inrix tools and features to support statewide traffic and incident management. As part of this agreement, Iowa DOT is now the first transportation agency worldwide to employ Inrix Dangerous Slowdowns, a newly launched service that warns drivers and DOTs of sudden reductions in speed or stopped traffic on the roadway. It helps prevent back-of-queue collisions where rapidly forming congestion creates a situation that requires advanced driver awareness.
Iowa DOT will also use Inrix real-time traffic services that include: performance measures—an on-demand, cloud-based analytics suite that uses traffic data to help transportation planners understand what is happening on the roads, benchmark and improve performance, and maximize investment; trips—provides insight into the trips people take, including where they begin and end their journeys, and the waypoints in between; real-time traffic flow—uses anonymous, real-time GPS data from millions of connected vehicles and devices to deliver the broadest and most accurate traffic information on all major roads.
