State DOT becomes latest partner in crowdsourced traffic information exchange program
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) agreed to become a partner in the Connected Citizens program from crowdsourcing traffic app Waze this week, providing another source of information for Kentucky drivers.
Traditionally, Waze relies on notifications from its users to alert drivers of accidents, construction and other factors impacting traffic through their smartphones. In late 2014, however, the company launched Connected Citizens, which integrates data from municipal partners at the local and state levels. In addition to sharing information on road closures, accidents and public events, KYTC will receive updates from drivers to complement its own information.
More than 20 municipal organizations worldwide have joined the program since its launch in October. As part of the partnership agreement, groups are expected to share their data and experiences with other Connected Citizens partners.
KYTC has said it will continue to maintain its existing 511 service.
