A new website launched last week by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) offers transportation agencies a wide variety of tools to implement their own active traffic management programs. Website content focuses on managing travel demand, traffic demand and traffic flow.

All tools, guidance documents and other resources are drawn from FHWA’s Active Transportation and Demand Management (ATDM) program. ATDM consists of three main focus areas: Active Traffic Management, Active Demand Management and Active Parking Management.

Active Traffic Management is addressed through strategies such as adaptive ramp metering, dynamic merge control, dynamic speed limits and dynamic lane reversal. Active Demand Management covers areas such as dynamic fare reduction, dynamic ridesharing and dynamic high-occupancy lanes; Active Parking Management ideas discussed include dynamic parking reservation, dynamically priced parking and dynamic overflow transit parking.
