NHTSA partnering with southern states on traffic safety effort

July 17, 2018

The Operation Southern Shield campaign, dedicated to reducing traffic speeds, runs July 16-22

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has partnered with the states of Georgia, South Carolina and other southern states for the second annual Operation Southern Shield.

Georgia's Governor's Office of Highway Safety says starting this week drivers need to be hyper-aware behind the wheel and, most of all, slow down.

While the campaign runs July 16th through the 22nd, law enforcement will be cracking down all summer long when officials say they typically see a spike in deaths on the roadways.

The Georgia Department of Transportation says during last year's Operation Southern Shield, traffic accidents were 35% lower than the other three weeks in July.
