SMART STREETS: U.S. DOT and Sidewalk Labs team up on Smart City Challenge

March 18, 2016

U.S. DOT and Alphabet's Sidewalks Labs announced a transportation platform called Flow

Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx and Alphabet-owned Sidewalk Labs CEO Dan Doctoroff announced a partnership that will deploy the tech firm's new Flow transportation platform in the city that wins the U.S. DOT's Smart City Challenge.

The platform will collect data from mobility apps to help local officials manage traffic and test transportation alternatives, and "offers unprecedented citywide transportation analytics to help cities understand congestion and identify areas underserved by transit using aggregated anonymized data," Foxx said.

The U.S. DOT will award up to $40 million to a mid-sized city who best embodies the concept of a “Smart City” by integrating autonomous vehicles, smart sensors and connected vehicles into its transportation infrastructure. The seven finalists include the cities of: Austin, Columbus, Denver, Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Portland and San Francisco.
