The Iowa DOT opened a new traffic management center in Ankeny to track traffic conditions and accidents statewide.
Prior to the new traffic center there was a smaller traffic center located in the basement of the DOT’s headquarters in Ames.
Installed for $257,000, the center can display 48 video feeds at once from a total of 320 cameras statewide. Workers at the new center help dispatch highway helper trucks to assist motorists who experience mechanical difficulties and can also more efficiently direct law enforcement to where help is needed.
"The purpose of the center is to monitor traffic, and keep traffic flowing throughout the state of Iowa on the state's primary highway system," said Andrea Henry with the Iowa DOT.
