TRAFFIC CONTROL: Los Angeles traffic center prepares for “Carmageddon II”

Officials with the Automated Traffic Surveillance and Control (ATSAC) Center in Los Angeles have begun preparations for a major shutdown of I-405 the weekend of September 29. The shutdown—which residents refer to as “Carmageddon II”—will facilitate the remaining demolition of the Mulholland Bridge, which began last year.  

City officials have promised that the ATSAC Center will be staffed 24-7 through the duration of the shutdown, which will close both the north- and southbound portions of I-405. Police, firefighters and engineers will also be on hand to help manage traffic and respond to incidents as needed.

Located in the lower levels of city hall, the ATSAC Center provides control of 4,400 traffic signals across Los Angeles. Workers are able to monitor traffic across the city on 400 cameras.
