Douglas County residents are preparing to vote on a transportation referendum next week that would help improve travel conditions and incident management on I-20.

The central focus of the referendum measures would allow for the creation of a county traffic control center in the administrative offices of the Douglas County Department of Transportation.  Other provisions would include:

  • Expansion of an underground fiber optics system from the I-285 and I-20 interchange west to Ga. Hwy. 5
  • Additional cameras for traffic monitoring purposes along the interstate
  • New signs notifying motorists of traffic problems

The ultimate goal is to create a full traffic communication network across the entire county. With these capabilities, officials would be able to manage traffic signals to reroute traffic around incidents and keep the flow moving.
