New Orleans installing intelligent transportation system along I-10

    Officials with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LaDOTD) announced Wednesday the start of a project to install a new intelligent transportation system (ITS) along I-10. The system is meant to reduce traffic congestion and increase safety for the more than 460,000 licensed drivers in the New Orleans area.

     

    Officials with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LaDOTD) announced Wednesday the start of a project to install a new intelligent transportation system (ITS) along I-10. The system is meant to reduce traffic congestion and increase safety for the more than 460,000 licensed drivers in the New Orleans area.

    In the initial stages, 24 new surveillance cameras and eight dynamic message signs will be installed along I-10 from Kenner to the Central Business District, I-610 and U.S. 90. All of the equipment will be monitored and controlled from the Regional Transportation Management Center in New Orleans.

    The entire project is expected to last six to nine months with a total cost between $5 billion and $7.5 billion.
