The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LADOTD) announced the completion of the Causeway Interchange project in early May, and said the improvements are already meeting their goals of improving traffic flow and increasing safety.
The bulk of the two-phase project focused on adding new ramps at several access points near the interchange of Causeway Boulevard and I-10 in New Orleans. In the recently completed Phase 2, three new elevated ramps were built to connect southbound Causeway Boulevard to I-10, both westbound and eastbound. LADOTD crews also added a new ground-level ramp.
According to INRIX data, the interchange has already dropped from the nation’s 78th-most congested roadway to 124th since the first ramps opened in January. LADOTD notes that the new ramps help improve safety by eliminating the friction caused when traffic from Veterans Boulevard—which runs below I-10—merges onto the interstate.
Both phases of the project combined cost LADOTD approximately $87 million.
