Colorado DOT suspends intercity bus service in response to COVID-19

March 31, 2020

The Colorado DOT (CDOT) this week suspended its Bustang and Outrider intercity bus service throughout the state as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

CDOT says the suspension is meant to reduce travel between cities during the pandemic. The suspension is planned to last through at least April 11 and will be reevaluated as guidance or gubernatorial orders change.

The department is urging all travelers to stay at home whenever possible, limiting all travel to what is absolutely critical, as defined under the statewide stay-at-home order. CDOT says avoiding travel between cities and regions is an important part of limiting the spread of COVID-19 between different communities. Gov. Polis has specifically urged state residents to keep close to home when engaging in limited critical activities allowed under the stay-at-home order.

“We must do everything we can right now to limit the spread of COVID-19,” CDOT Executive Director Shoshana Lew said in a statement. “Minimizing travel between communities is one important piece of our fight against this virus, and so we are suspending our intercity bus service. Please stay at home whenever possible and comply with the governor’s stay-at-home order in full.”

CDOT says the suspension of these intercity services is different than the local transit services that continue to provide essential trips in communities throughout Colorado.
