The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is in the process of adding sensors along I-17 in the Phoenix area over the next few weeks as part of an effort to monitor traffic flow across the state.
The data collected by the sensors will be used to estimate travel times, which will be displayed on overhead message boards. ADOT, the Maricopa Association of Governments and the regional transportation-planning agency will use the data to make decisions on highway improvements.
Similar sensors are already in place in the area, but this project is adding new ones that offer more reliable and advanced technologies.
ADOT most recently installed these sensors on I-10, U.S. 60 and State Route 51. Once the current installation process is completed, there will be more than 85 locations on Phoenix highways equipped with the sensors.
