Texas DOT advances I-635 LBJ East project after developer is chosen

May 31, 2019

Construction on the project is set to begin in early 2020

The Texas Transportation Commission has conditionally selected Pegasus Link Constructors to develop the I-635 LBJ East project in the Dallas area.

According to a release from the Texas DOT (TxDOT), the $1.74 billion project will rebuild roughly 11 miles of I-635 from just east of U.S. 75 in North Dallas to I-30 in Mesquite. The agency will now move forward in negotiating contract terms with Pegasus Link Constructors, with final award and execution expected later in the year.

When complete, LBJ East will be expanded from the current four main lanes in each direction to five main lanes in each direction. The current single tolled managed lane in each direction will be rebuilt along with the I-30 interchange. Construction of continuous frontage roads throughout the project is another important element, the goal of which is to enhance safety and mobility by improving the flow of traffic during major incidents.

As part of this project, TxDOT also is partnering with the city of Dallas to reconfigure the Skillman/Audelia interchange, which will feature aesthetic elements to the bridge over the LBJ Freeway. The interchange was designed by the city of Dallas and was selected for funding by the Regional Transportation Council of the North Central Texas Council of Governments.

TxDOT has designated the original 50-year-old LBJ Freeway as outdated and insufficient for meeting modern transportation demands. The aim of the design-build development approach on this project is to deliver the LBJ East quicker than under traditional methods.

Construction on the project is set to begin in early 2020 and is scheduled for completion by late 2024.
