Drivers in Maine should expect new eyes on the road this summer as the Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT) begins installing traffic cameras along busy stretches of Interstate 95 and Interstate 295.

The nearly $969,000 project, handled by Electric Light Inc. of Cape Neddick, is slated to begin next week, and is expected to be completed by Oct. 30, according to MDOT.

The new cameras will expand the department’s monitoring network, aiming to enhance traffic safety and improve response to incidents.

Camera installations are planned on I-95 at exits 109 and 112 in Augusta, exit 120 in Sidney, exits 127 and 130 in Waterville and exit 133 in Fairfield. On I-295, cameras will be installed at exits 10 in Falmouth, 15 in Cumberland and 20 in Freeport.

“This is going to add between nine and 15 more cameras to the network,” said Andrew Gobeil, MDOT spokesperson, in a statement. “We monitor these cameras 24/7 and can quickly call emergency services when there’s an incident.”

The cameras are not intended for law enforcement use, Gobeil said, addressing concerns that they could be used to issue traffic citations. Instead, the footage will be used solely for real-time monitoring and traffic updates.

Maine already operates numerous cameras along the turnpike. This project aims to expand coverage further north, giving MDOT better visibility and allowing the public to check conditions through its website.
