One of Statesboro, Ga.’s most dangerous intersections is receiving a major safety upgrade as the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) begins installing new radar-based traffic technology.

The intersection of Fair Road and Veterans Memorial Parkway, which saw 135 crashes last year alone, according to a report from Griceconnect.com, will serve as a test site for GDOT’s “dilemma zone” detection system.

The pilot program was first discussed during a City Council meeting last month by members who emphasized the intersection’s high crash rate and the urgent need for improvements.

The dilemma zone refers to the brief period when a traffic light turns yellow and drivers must quickly decide whether to stop or proceed through the intersection. The radar system is designed to identify vehicles approaching during this window.

If a vehicle meets specific criteria—such as speed and distance from the intersection—the system can extend the green light to allow more time to safely clear the intersection.

GDOT spokesperson Jill Nagel confirmed to Griceconnect.com that installation is underway and expected to be completed before the 2025–2026 school year. Once operational, the system will be evaluated for effectiveness, with GDOT collecting traffic data to assess its impact.

The intersection, located near Georgia Southern University and several commercial areas, is among the busiest in the city.

Although no city funding or vote was required for the project, Statesboro officials will continue to coordinate with GDOT throughout implementation.
