Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly announced more than $4.5 million in funding for 20 transportation innovation projects across Kansas, supporting initiatives that use various technology to improve the safety and efficiency of infrastructure statewide.
The funding comes from the Kansas Department of Transportation’s Innovative Technology Program, which received 22 applications requesting over $5 million.
The selected projects showcase advancements in areas such as unmanned aerial systems, artificial intelligence and traffic management tools designed to enhance mobility and infrastructure resilience.
“Investing in innovation is crucial for the future of transportation in Kansas,” Gov. Kelly said in a statement. “These projects reflect the creativity and commitment of our communities to make our roads safer and our infrastructure smarter.”
Among the initiatives funded are an AI-based street assessment tool in multiple counties, an AI-driven blocked railroad crossing alert system in Crawford County and a UAS flight simulation center in Salina.
The projects are designed to address both rural and urban transportation challenges and promote long-term, tech-driven improvements.
“These awards demonstrate how we can apply emerging technologies to real-world needs across the state,” said Calvin Reed, state transportation secretary.
