According to the latest FHWA data, Iowa's overall road conditions are mildly positive. 9% of state roads are considered to be in poor condition against 74% considered to be in either good or fair shape.

Bridge Conditions

According to the latest FHWA data, Iowa's overall bridge conditions are alarming. 19% of state bridges are considered to be in poor condition, 42% are in fair condition, and 39% are considered to be in good shape, ranking the state as 3rd in the nation according to the American Road Transportation Builders Association's deficiency rank (which takes into account the District of Columbia, as well as Puerto Rico).

There are 24,043 bridges in the state, comprising 8,844,910 sq meters of overall bridge deck area.
