Agency seeking user comments on project planning tool; more updates to come

Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) project planners got their first look at a new ITS project planning tool last week following U.S. DOT’s alpha release of the Systems Engineering Tool for Intelligent Transportation (SET-IT) software. The agency has begun seeking comments on the software from users.

Jointly developed by the U.S. DOT Intelligent Transportation Systems Joint Program Office and Iteris, SET-IT utilizes the Connected Vehicle Reference Implementation Architecture (CVRIA) framework—another joint venture between the two organizations—in combination with drawing and database tools; the software allows ITS project architects to easily develop pilots, test beds and early deployments.

CVRIA is a tool developed to assist with the implementation of connected-vehicle policies, standards and projects. The tool is organized under four Viewpoints:

● Enterprise (examining relationships between organizations related to connected-vehicle technology);
● Functional (examining abstract processes and data flows related to connected-vehicle systems);
● Physical (examining relationships between physical connected-vehicle systems and devices); and
● Communications (examining communications protocols needed for physical ITS elements to talk to each other).

As an alpha release, SET-IT is provided as-is with the current capabilities of the tool at this point in its development. Future versions will include additional functionality such as an enterprise view, a communications view, correspondence between views, more output, hierarchical models, etc.

Microsoft Visio 2010 or 2013 is required to use this tool. To utilize tabular output functions, users must also have a copy of Microsoft Word or Excel.
