Ohio Highlights Human Cost of Speeding in New Safety Message
In a pointed reminder of the dangers of speeding, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) District 12 took to social media this week, aligning its message with ongoing efforts by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to curb reckless driving.
“Are you willing to take the risk by speeding?” the agency asked in its post, warning that excessive speed increases the likelihood of losing control, reduces the effectiveness of vehicle safety features and often results in more severe crashes and injuries.
Beyond citations and fines, ODOT emphasized the deeper toll of speeding: lives lost. The post described the outcomes of reckless driving as a “tragic reminder” that the risk is never worth it — impacting not just drivers, but their families, communities and emergency responders.
Speeding remains a leading contributor to traffic deaths nationwide. According to NHTSA, speeding plays a role in about one-third of all fatal crashes, a troubling trend that has persisted despite years of awareness efforts.
ODOT’s campaign — tagged #BeBetter, #NotWorthIt and #SaveALife — aims to reframe the conversation around speed, urging drivers to prioritize safety over haste.
In a culture where speed is often equated with efficiency, the department’s message challenges motorists to weigh the real, human consequences — and choose responsibility over risk.
