SAFETY: VDOT to conduct testing of controversial guardrail system
Aug. 27, 2015
The Virginia Department of Transportation will soon conduct independent testing of the ET Plus guard rail system.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) plans to conduct testing of the ET Plus manufactured by Trinity Highway Products, a controversial guardrail system. The manufacturer of the guardrail system said it passed all safety standards by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
In 2014, a federal court last year found Trinity Industries defrauded the government by modifying the ET Plus guardrail system in an effort to save money without informing the government about the change.
The company is also being sued several people across the U.S. who said that they were severely injured in crashes with the ET Plus guardrail system. However, no personal injury or death lawsuit has been tried in court.
No states are currently installing the ET Plus guardrail system, and the federal government has not issued a recall, and it remains on the federal government approved products list.
A Trinity Industries spokesman said that a recall would be unnecessary because the product has passed eight FHWA requested tests.
