In 2024, 120 people have died on Nebraska roads, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT). That includes two workers for the transportation agency being killed in work zones, and another who was seriously injured.
All three crashes were from distracted driving and could have been prevented, according to NDOT director Vicki Kramer.
“We went close to a decade without a Nebraska DOT worker hurt in a work zone,” Kramer said. “To have three major incidents within a year is absolutely appalling.”
Last month 19 people died in traffic crashes, which is up from 17 deaths in June 2023.
Kramer stressed the importance of wearing seatbelts, with approximately 80% of Nebraskans killed in fatal crashes are not using them.
“The Nebraska Department of Transportation wants to bring your attention to a pressing issue that demands immediate action - the need for safe driving in Nebraska,” NDOT said in a news release. “As we approach the peak of summer travel, it is crucial to reflect on the responsibility we carry every time we get behind the wheel.”
In May and June, the Nebraska State Patrol reported over 950 speeding citations, including 43 for going at least 100 mph.
“These behaviors translate into dangerous and potentially deadly situations. We can and must do better as a state and individuals,” Kramer said.
